Saint Martin of Tours
Carved wood, polychrome and gilded. With its period frame, c. 1600.
The patron saint of the city of Tours (France) appears at the moment of parting his cloak in order to give it to a poor person in need.
It is likely that this sculpture comes from some unlocated Spanish altarpiece body or street.
Provenance:
First, unknown.
Sotheby Parke Bernet Los Angeles: Auction October 25 through 28, 1976 (sale 197), lot 60. This sculpture is reproduced in black and white in its cataloging card, in color on full page and on the front and back of the catalog (see last image).
