RUSSIAN SOVIET ABSTRACT PAINTING ATTR VERA PESTEL
Attributed to Vera Pestel Russian, Soviet 1887 to 1952, Abstract composition, watercolor and gouache on board, signed in the Cyrillic lower center, unframed. One of a kind artwork. Vera Efremovna Pestel was a Russian artist and teacher. Studied at the Stroganov Central School of Industrial Art, 1904-06, in the studio of K. Yuon and I. Dudin, 1906-07, in the studios of Paris and Munich, 1909-12, worked in the collective free workshop of M. Larionov The Tower in Moscow. Lived in Moscow. Participated in most avant-garde exhibitions since 1915. In her cubist and futuristic works of this period noticeable the influence of N. Udaltsova. Member of Malevich's group Supremus, 1916-17. Moving away from non-objective art, she joined the society Makovets, 1921-25 and began to work in the style of lyrical realism. In the 1930s she worked in the field of magazine illustration and mural painting. The artist's works are kept in the Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum and other museums and private collections.
