EGYPTIAN CUBE STONE STATUE OF HARPOCRATES
Old Kingdom period, Ca. 2575-2134 BC. A limestone block statue of Harpocrates, carved in grey limestone. The figure is fully cloaked, with only the head and hands exposed. The head is slightly raised. Several features suggest the late period nature of this work. The body forms such as the overhang of the arms, the external contours of the legs and the waistline visible at the back are so clearly delineated that they suggest a pseudo-block statue, rather than a fully cloaked block statue. For similar see: The British Museum, Museum number EA24429. Size: 100mm x 50mm; Weight: 390g. Provenance: Private UK collection; Ex. M. H. collection, Kensington, acquired on the UK art market in the 1970s.
