A FINELY CAST SELJUK NIELLO INLAY RING
Ca. 13th-14th century AD . An enamelled ring of substantial weight and striking presence. This gold ring is crafted in a bold hexagonal form, the central panel cast in high relief with a dynamic figural motif—possibly mythological—encased within a raised hexagonal frame. Surrounding the central relief is a band of dark blue enamel inscribed in nasta‘liq script, forming a continuous border that enhances the composition with elegant contrast. The shoulders are intricately modelled with sinuous, intertwining floral and vegetal motifs, worked in high relief and extending seamlessly into the hoop. Triangular recesses between the applied floral elements are filled with further enamel decoration, echoing the rich visual language of 18th-century Mughal jewellery. The interior of the ring bears an engraved inscription, likely indicating ownership or a talismanic phrase. Unlike gem-set rings of the period, this piece demonstrates the sophisticated casting and chasing techniques of its time, relying on form, relief, and enamel to create visual impact rather than the use of precious stones. For similar see: Spink & Son, Islamic Rings and Talismans, London, 198.
