Rabbeinu Yosef ben Rabbi Meir Halevi ibn Migas (1077-1141) a famed Posek from the period of the Rishonim, a leading disciple of the Rif and his successor as Rosh Yeshiva. One of the first sages of Spain who wrote elucidations on the tractates of the Shas.

The title page of the present Sefer addresses him as "the disciple of the Rif and the Rav of the Rambam", since the Rambam addressed him as his Rav. However, today it is known that Rabbi Yosef Migas was actually the Rav of Rabbi Maimon the Dayan, the Rambam's father and passed away when the Rambam was still too young to be his disciple.
