A PARTIALLY GILT WOOD PANEL WITH JAIN SIDDHA BAHUBALI ENTWINED WITH FOREST VINES
India, 19th century

The rectangular panel with a standing naked man, between his feet a vase from which two leafy branches clinging between legs and arms; the rounded face set between ears with elongated lobes.

207 x 55 cm

Provenance: ambassador Gerardo Carante.
Prince Bahubali (literally "the one who has strong arms") is an eminent figure of the Jainist pantheon. A famous legend tells that he definitively renounced violence after having risked killing his brother during a fight. He then retired to meditate in a forest where his body was enveloped by vegetation and his hair became a bird's nest. Finally he obtained the liberation (moksha), reaching the condition of as perfect being (siddha), even though not joining the group of twenty-four tirthankara prophets.
