Guinea Pig Club Signed Gleave and Simpson WW11 Pilots and Guinea Pigs 20 7 82 Jersey. 41st Anniversary of the Guinea pig Club. Green Flown cachet Flown in RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight in a Hurricane. Personally Signed by Gp Capt Tom Gleave Commanding Officer RAF Manston at the time of action Group Captain T. P. Gleave CBE. Squadron Leader Gleave commanded No 253 Squadron from 2 June 1940, at RAF Kirton - in - Lindsey. Shot down and grievously burned, August 31st 1940 whilst defending RAF Biggin Hill, Commanded RAF Manston October 5th 1941 to April 13th 1942. Chief Guinea Pig. Also Signed by Sqn Ldr W Simpson CBE, DFC, and Croix de Guerre. Was Flight Commander No 12 Sqn 1936 to 1940. Part of the advanced Striking Force in France was shot down in his Fairey Battle on 10th May 1940, and suffered severe burns. He was later awarded the DFC for that action prior to the accident. He eventually made his way back to the UK, Via Spain and Portugal in Oct 1941. Sqn Ldr William Simpson underwent numerous surgical operations under Sir Archibald McIndoe and later wrote three books about war experiences and the Guinea Pig's. Before being invalided in 1944. S/L Simpson served with the S. O. E. Details and black and White photo Size 5 ½ by 3 ½ inches. enclosed. Certified Copy No 626 of 1026. Good condition.
