First issue of the FIRST PORTUGUESE PERIODICAL. The Gazeta is considered the first publication "that meets the three indispensable conditions for a publication to be considered a newspaper: periodicity, sequence and specific content, different from that of the book or pamphlet" [Dic.Hist.Port., 246]. For around two centuries, small flyer sheets circulated in Portugal, called "Relações de Novas Gerais" or just "Relações" or "Notícias Avulsas" printed since the end of the century. XVI. However, they did not have a regular character or even rigor, as they limited themselves to reporting more or less important events in Portugal or abroad "not always with great truth" [ibidem]. During Philippine domination, these flying sheets propagandizing against the Spanish sovereign multiplied, leading King Philip III to impose severe limitations on them. These are the so-called "Gazetas da Restauração", of which the first is the one we present here, which inaugurated, so to speak, journalism in Portugal, being published monthly (with few exceptions) until at least September 1647, becoming, thus, "periodic information that had previously been irregular, depending on the gravity of events or the will of the printers. The sheet began to be expected on certain dates, thus creating the characteristic habits of readers of the periodical press" [ibidem, P. 247]. Having very restricted circulation due to its high price and general instruction, the Gazeta is a RARE work and very important for the history of the press in Portugal.
