A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD ‘OF THE BURNING BUSH’ WITH A SILVER-GILT OKLAD Russian, Palekh, early 19th century (icon), Russian, Moscow, Igor Antipov Antipiev, 1837 (oklad) Egg tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. In the centre of the composition the Mother of God of the Burning Bush in a double, circular and rayed aureole, against two diamond-shaped glories, the blue one painted with angels in grisaille, the red one representing the Apocalyptic personifications of the Evangelists. Further behind, swirling clouds of different colours containing angels, each holding attributes of varying symbolisms. The corners illustrating four prophets including David and Salomon. The spandrels depicting Old Testament typological apparitions related to the Mother of God. The lower border portraying the Tree of Jesse. Ten Old Testament prophets bearing open scrolls appearing on the borders. The imagery rendered delicately largely with pastel colours in reds and blues. Overlaid with a richly chased and embossed silver-gilt oklad. Marked with city hallmark, assayer’s mark, 84 standard and master’s mark ‘EA’. Minimally restored. 36.5 x 30.5 cm.
