Origin: Griechenland, Kreta, 16. Jh.
Technique: Verbund zweier Laubholz-Bretter mit zwei Rückseiten-Sponki (verloren). Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, Goldgrund, Nimben ornamental punziert

A LARGE ICON OF THE DEISIS Greek, Cretan, 16th century Tempera on wood panel. Executed on a gold ground. The haloes ornately tooled. The oversized figure of Christ at the centre, seated on a throne with red and blue cushions, his feet resting on a red cushion. His hand raised in blessing, supporting the Gospels on his knee. The Mother of God and John the Baptist inclining their heads towards him, raising their hands in supplication. The facial features and expressive hands accentuated by white striations. The drapery rendered with stylized gradating tones and gold striations. Vertical crack with losses restored. 46.7 x 43 cm. mit weißen Pinselstrichen. Eine sehr ähnliche Ikone, die um 1500 entstanden ist, befindet See a very similar Greek icon, circa 1500, in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
