A LARGE PEDESTAL SHOWING THE LAMENTATION AND ENTOMBEMENT OF CHRIST Veneto-Cretan, late 15th century Tempera on wood. Executed on a gold ground. The front showing the grief for Christ. The Virgin supporting the upper part of the corpse and kissing his face. Behind Mary Magdadene accompanied by a woman in mourning. The figures opposite balancing the composition, John holding Christ’s left hand, The city of Jerusalem with a mountain-range portrayed in the background. The sky rendered in gold. Minimally restored. 28.5 x 104 cm.
