Technique: Holztafel mit rückseitiger Samtabdeckung. Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, Goldgrund. Silber, gestanzt

A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE OLD TESTAMENT TRINITY WITH A SILVER BASMA Russian, Moscow, circa 1500 Tempera on gessoed wood panel with velvet backing and with kovcheg. Finely executed on a gold ground. The border later overlaid with a silver basma. The angels seated around a table under the oak of Mamre, to the left the Temple, to the right a rock mountain. The figures rendered in classical proportions, each holding a staff and bending their head forward. Iconographic this graceful composition deriving from the celebrated icon of Andrey Rubliov. The faces painted with subtle shades of brown, the garments and landscape mainly with red and various tones of green and yellow. Set into a later panel (vrezka), minor areas of retouching. 29 x 24.2 cm. Silberbasma später. Provenance: Gallery Ilas Neufert, Munich, (autumn 1973), cat. 8 (cover image).
