Technique: Einzeltafel mit einer Rückseiten-Querleiste. Kowtscheg, Eitempera auf Kreidegrund, Nimben vergoldet

A VERY FINE ICON SHOWING THE ASCENT OF PROPHET ELIJAH Russian, Novgorod, early 16th century Tempera on wood panel with kovcheg. The Prophet in a chariot dragged by a winged horse, in a fiery glory ascends on to heaven, while handing over his mantle to his disciple. The latter standing on a rocky landscape, the blessing hand of God appearing from the segment of sky at the right upper corner. The background and border stripped to gesso, minor vertical crack, minimally restored. 32 x 25.3 cm. nimmt. Farbe des Hintergrundes abgenommen, vertikale Rissbildung, min. rest. Exhibited: Eikon. Ikonen des 15. bis 19. Jahrhunderts aus deutschem Privatbesitz, Recklinghausen 1979, cat. 10.
