A BYZANTINE BRONZE LAMP, CA. 6TH-10TH CENTURY AD

A bronze hanging lamp or censer of possible Byzantine design. Etchings along the rim of the item and the base depict various forms of symbols and iconography with a floral etching depicted on the bottom of the base. The curved body of the lamp has carvings that depict various religious scenes. Three arms protrude along the rim where chains would be connected to hang the vessel. A single hook remains in one of the arms where a chain once connected. These vessels would have been used as either light sources in buildings or for the burning of incense in religious establishments. The interior of the vessel shows evidence of burning from such uses.

Byzantine Empire - CA. 6th - 10th Century AD

H: 4 1/4 in., (10.8 cm.)
