ELGAR EDWARD: (1857-1934) English composer. A good A.M.Q.S., Edward Elgar, penned to the verso of the front free endpaper of a small 8vo softcover edition of The Story of A Midsummer Night´s Dream, n.p. (Worcester?), n.d. In dark fountain pen ink Elgar has neatly penned four bars of music which he identifies as being from The Fairies section of Felix Mendelssohn´s 1826 concert overture A Midsummer Night´s Dream (Op.21). The small 8vo softcover edition of The Story of a Midsummer Night´s Dream from the play of Shakespeare is retold by Alice Spencer Hoffman and published by J. M. Dent & Co., London, n.d., as part of the Stories from Shakespeare´s Plays for Children series, and with illustrations by R. Anning Bell. With the oval ownership stamp of St. Mary´s Convent, Battenhall, Worcester, to the half-title page and the Ex Libris plate of Constance Berkeley pasted to the inside front cover. The front free endpaper (featuring Elgar´s quotation) and front cover are neatly detached at the spine from the rest of the volume. Some light age wear, about VG
