GOETHE JOHANN WOLFGANG VON: (1749-1832) German poet, playwright and novelist. A.N.S., Goethe, one page, 12mo (approx. 8 x 8 cm), Weimar, 8th May 1827, to [Moritz Daniel] Oppenheim, in German. Goethe´s note is penned on a small, stiff card and states (translated) ´Herr Oppenheim is courteously requested to have his painting of Felsner collected´. Some light age wear and minor scuffing (only very slightly affecting one word of text, and not the signature) and with a couple of very minor traces of former mounting to the verso, G
Moritz Daniel Oppenheim (1800-1882) German painter. After completing his art studies between 1817-19, Oppenheim travelled to Paris and Rome before settling in Frankfurt in 1825. It was at around this time that the artist exhibited his painting David Playing the Harp for Saul (1823) and a great number of admirers from all parts of Europe subsequently visited his studio. Oppenheim met Goethe in Weimar in 1827, and the German poet was later instrumental in obtaining the honorary title of Professor for the painter, conferred upon him by Charles Frederick, Grand Duke of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.
