EDISON THOMAS: (1847-1931) - EDISON THOMAS: (1847-1931) American inventor of the phonograph and light bulb among many other items. A.L.S., Edison (a slightly hurried example), two pages (separate leaves), small 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Fagan. Edison writes in bold pencil and sends some instructions following an experimental laboratory exercise, in full, ´Call Patterson´s attention to the fact that if 90 grams of Lithia is right for say an A4 it is not right for any other size as we have found out at Lab. There is an unknown relation between the Lithia, the amount of solution & capacity of the cell - a single tube cell gives best results with 2 grms Lithia but this would be 240 grms to an A4 & this is fatal altho OK for a single tube´ . Very slightly irregularly torn to the upper edges of each page, a small paperclip rust stain to the upper left corner, and with some light areas of discolouration, G Thomas Edison died in 1931 with a tin of Lithia (better known as Lithium oxide) on his desk. One of the final projects in the great inventor’s life was experimenting with new chemistries in what he called “storage batteries.” The perfect battery — one that was cheap, rechargeable and packed with power — was an elusive quarry.
