FREUD SIGMUND: (1856-1939) - FREUD SIGMUND: (1856-1939) Austrian neurologist, the founder of psychoanalysis. A very fine vintage signed sepia 9 x 12 photograph of Freud, the engaging image showing the psychoanalyst in a pensive semi-profile head and shoulders pose, wearing his spectacles. Signed ( ´Sigm. Freud´ ) in dark fountain pen ink to the lower photographer´s mount, immediately beneath the image, and dated 1936 in his hand. Attractively and professionally matted in two pale shades of brown, complementing the sepia tone of Freud´s image and framed and glazed in a dark brown wooden frame to an overall size of 15.5 x 18. A striking and highly desirable signed portrait. Some very light, extremely minor foxing to the mount, VG Provenance: The present photograph was gifted by Anna Freud (1895-1982), the sixth and youngest child of Sigmund Freud, to the American psychiatrist Joseph J. Michaels (1902-1966). Michaels served as President of the Boston Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, Inc. from 1958-61, as an instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, and as a Visiting Psychiatrist at the Beth Israel Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. His specialist and extensive research centred on the causes of delinquency and impulse character disorders. From 1935 onwards Michaels travelled frequently to Austria for his studies and on one such trip to Vienna Anna Freud presented Michaels with the signed photograph as the two of them studied dream interpretation together.
