In April 1980, Christie's sold in New York at a public auction for three million dollars a collection of Russian icons by the American industrialist George Hann. It was argued that the icons come from the collection of the Tretyakov Gallery. The press marked this event as "the sale of the century". Russian restorer and art critic Vladimir Teteryatnikov, who before his emigration from the USSR served as the head of a department at the All-Union Institute of Restoration, argued that the best items in this collection were fakes. Christie's tried to stop the publication of his exposé book by accusing the author of defamation and went to court. The court of New York allowed Teteryatnikov to publish the book "Icons and fakes".
