1936-s Oregon Trail Old Commem Half Dollar 50c Grades Choice Unc. One of the most beautifully designed coins in American History, Designed by the same engraver that designed the Buffalo Nickel, This coin Commemorates the Oregon Trail that brought thousands of Intrepid pioneers to the West in the 1830's and 40's. When Buying an Oregon Trail Commemorative, regardless of year and mint the Points to first show wear are the Indian’s hand and thigh on the obverse and the ox and the bows of the wagon’s cover on the reverse, these are the high points. The 1936-S is the fourth lowest mintage of the 14 Oregon Trail commemorative half dollars and it is indeed the fourth rarest in total number of survivors, surpassed in rarity only by the three very low mintage 1939 issues. There were 5006 originally minted and the issue price was $1.60 per coin. The 1936-S had good initial collector demand and in the summer of 1936 they were bringing as much as $5.50 in various dealer offerings. The 1936-S, like all Oregon's, comes very nice. The surfaces are normally very clean and the luster is usually frosty and excellent. The typical grade is MS64 to MS66. This issue is virtually unknown in circulated grades as the entire issue was saved.
