Disney's Mickey Mouse and Donald DuckAnimators Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks came up with the idea for Mickey Mouse in 1928. Oswald the Lucky Rabbit was a character that Disney had previously created, but after losing the rights to him, he chose to create a new character.
