A letter handwritten and signed by Rabbi Yehuda Leib Rif Av Beit Din of Zager to Rabbi Shmuel Salant. 1896.
The letter is written on both sides of a large official leaf.
Letter by Rabbi Yehuda Leib Rif are extremely rare and have never been seen in auctions!
In the letter, Rabbi Rif expresses his sorrow regarding the dispute between the residents of Jerusalem over the charity money from abroad. He discusses the issue and offers solutions to solve it.
At the end of the letter, he emphasizes that he absolutely certain that Rabbi Salant is blameless; however, "only my desire to find the answer to this substantial question" of how to handle the charity money has led him to write the letter before us.
Rabbi Yehuda Leib Rif was one of the geniuses of Lithuania. He served as Av Beit Din of Fern and then as the rabbi of Shadov and Zager. He was the in-law of Rabbi Raphael Shapira of Volozhin. He corresponded with Rabbi Chaim Berlin. He died in 1912. His son, Rabbi Yisrael Rif, replaced him as the rabbi of Zager and perished in the Holocaust.
