Complete Set of Banknotes of the Lodz-Litzmannstadt Ghetto in Excellent Condition – a Complete Set in Such Condition has Never been Seen in auctions – Extremely Rare
Values of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 Mark and 50 Pfennig.
50 Mark – low number (1246) rare.
1 Mark – very low number (701) rare.
These banknotes were issued by the Judenrat of the Lodz Ghetto, headed by Chaim Rumkowsky, for internal use in the ghetto.
Rumkowsky's signature appears on the banknotes.
Chaim Mordechai Rumkowski, the chairman of the Judenrat, supported the method of collaboration with the Germans and was convinced that Jewish productivity would ensure survival.
The name Litzmannstadt which is written on the banknotes was given to Lodz by Hitler in April 1940, commemorating a German general named Litzmann who was killed in the area during World War I.
