In 1871, he was elected Member of Parliament, then re-elected in 1876 and 1877. In the Chamber, he was chairman of the centre-left group. He became Minister of Public Education in 1877. In December 1882, he was appointed senator for life. Autograph letter signed, dated Versailles, 19.10.
