summer mountain landscape with a wide view of meadows, fields and cow pasture, a small village, hikers and agricultural horse and cart, on the horizon a river and imposing Alpine scenery, little impasto, very detailed landscape painting with fine brushwork, oil on canvas, mid 19th c., unsigned, painting is attributed to Johann Anton Castell, craquelure, few breaks in the painting layer, retouched, framed in gold stucco frame, folding dimensions approx. 54.5 x 77.5 cm. Artist's note: actually Johann Anton Castell, also Johann Anton Castelli, German landscape painter and copyist. Landscape painter and copyist (1810 Dresden to 1867 Dresden), studied 1827-28 at the Dresden Academy, from 1829 further training with Johan Christian Clausen Dahl in Dresden, undertook study trips through Bohemia, the Salzkammergut (1831) and Tyrol as well as to Vienna, influenced by Caspar David Friedrich, attended the Dresden Academy exhibitions, active in Dresden, Source: Thieme-Becker, AKL, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", lists of pupils of the Dresden Academy, Boetticher, Bénézit and Wikipedia.
