Picture of the mythological story of Cupid (also Cupid), the god of love, who fell in love with the earthly but extremely beautiful king's daughter Psyche. At the behest of his jealous mother Venus, Cupid was supposed to marry Psyche off to a demon - but instead he fell in love with the beauty himself and, with the help of Zephyr, the lord of the winds, abducted her incognito to a castle, where he visits her every night to feast on her beauty, the picture depicts a nocturnal scene with the childlike depiction of Cupid with lantern, who is looking at his slumbering beloved, glazed painting, oil on plywood, c. 1910, scratched signature lower right "M. Frohberg", somewhat in need of restoration, originally framed (bumped), folding dimensions approx. 96 x 187 cm. Artist info: born Magdalena Frohberg, German painter, draughtswoman and lithographer (1884 Dresden to 1950 New York), pupil of Jean Marchand in Paris and with E. Stauffer, further education at the Mexico City Art Academy, 1907 acquaintance with the American painter, writer, art critic, art promoter and organiser of the "Armory Show" New York Walter Pach (1883 New York to 1958 New York) in Venice, Married in 1914, maintained contacts with her husband including Gertrude and Leo Stein, Constantin Brâncuși, Odilon Redon, Henri Matisse, Robert Delaunay, Albert Gleizes, Fernand Léger, Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Duchamp-Villon, Jacques Villon, Francis Picabia, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco and Diego Rivera, lived with her husband in Berkeley in California in 1918, in Mexico City in 1922, temporarily in Paris in 1928-32, temporarily living in Mexico City in 1942 due to financial hardship, member of the New York Women Artists Association and member of the New York Society of Independent Artists, co-founded by her husband, to whose exhibitions she contributed in 1923-44, active in New York , source: Vollmer, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Schidlof France, Wikipedia and artprice.
