Chest portrait of an elegantly dressed dignified middle-aged gentleman, finely glazed portrait painting, on this Thieme-Becker writes: "... He was mainly employed in aristocratic circles. He only discarded the smooth manner of the porcelain painter very late. His best work is considered to be the life-size portrait of Count Thun-Hohenstein in the Rudolfinum in Prague (1871). ...", oil on canvas, signed and dated on the reverse "J. Brandeis 1869", restored missing parts in the canvas, beautifully framed, folding dimensions approx. 60 x 50 cm. Artist's info: actually Johann [Jan] Adolf Brandeis, Bohemian painter, porcelain painter, watercolourist and photographer (1813 Týniště nad Orlicí [Eng.: Tinischt] in Bohemia until 1872 Prague), first working as porcelain painter at the porcelain manufactory in Morchenstern [Czech.Smržovka] near Jablonec nad Nisou, from 1837 he studied at the academy of arts in Prague under František Tkadlík, at the same time he worked as a watercolourist and portrait painter, later he was a pupil at the public school of Joseph Bernhardt in Munich, he went on study trips through Germany, Holland and Belgium, about 1843 he worked as a daguerreotypist, 1843-44 he was a member of the Munich Art Society, 1853-54 he lived in Paris, where he was a pupil of Thomas Couture in oil painting, from 1854 he lived in Prague, where he worked as a portrait painter and from about 1860 as a portrait photographer. 1860 active as a portrait photographer, ran a photo studio 1861-1864 with the support of his brother-in-law, the photographer August Liebelt and the Prince of Thurn-Taxis, temporary stay in Vienna, Source: Thieme-Becker, AKL, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Naděžda Blažíčková-Horová "Art of the 19th century in Bohemia (1790-1910)", Info Pavel Scheufler and Müller-Singer.
