Artist info: Germ. Action artist, sculptor, draughtsman and art theorist (1921 Krefeld to 1986 Düsseldorf), 1941 acquaintance with Heinz Sielmann during war service, 1946 member of the Klever Künstlerbund, 1946-53 studied monumental sculpture at the Düsseldorf Academy with Joseph Enseling, from 1948 with Ewald Mataré and 1951-54 Mataré's master student, at the same time working on Heinz Sielmann's documentary films 1947-49, 1954-58 own studio in Düsseldorf-Heerdt, 1958-64 studio in the old Klever Kurhaus, 1959 creates his last conventional work of art, subsequently mainly an art theorist and from 1963 an important representative of Fluxus as an action artist, from 1961 lives in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel, 1961-72 professor of monumental sculpture at the Düsseldorf Academy, establishes his "Ring Talks" here 1966-72, dismissed from university service in 1972 because of growing differences with the Ministry of Science, but after a complaint was allowed to keep his professorial title and his studio "Raum 3" at the Academy until he reached the age of 65. Here, in 1980, together with Klaus Staeck, Willi Bongart and Georg Meistermann, he founded the "Freie Internationale Hochschule für Kreativität und interdisziplinäre Forschung (FIU)" (Free International School for Creativity and Interdisciplinary Research), regular participation in the documenta in Kassel, 1974 lecture tour of the USA, 1976 at the Venice Biennale, 1979 acquaintance with Andy Warhol, 1979 retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, 1981 stay in Rome and trip to Poland, represented in numerous museums, Source: Vollmer, AKL and Internet.
