Carl Walther, "Piazza Duomo in San Gimignano"
Hustle and bustle in front of the Torre Rognosa and the Palazzo del Podestá on the Piazza del Duomo, the medieval town centre of the Tuscan town of San Gimignano in the province of Siena is known as "Medieval Manhattan" due to its numerous imposing towers, Carl Walther also visited Italy on a study trip in 1913 and succumbed to the charm of the romantic small town, very large-format etching in burrs with rich colours and excellently captured light, c. 1913, monogrammed "CW" in relief at lower right in the plate, inscribed "Vorzugsdruck Nr. 3" and signed by hand "C Walther", somewhat stained and yellowed, framed behind glass (loosened), plate dimensions approx. 45.5 x 53.5 cm. Artist's info: actually Karl August Walther, German painter and graphic artist (1880). Painter and graphic artist (1880 Leipzig to 1956 Dresden), studied 1902-05 at the academy of arts in Dresden under Oskar Zwintscher and Richard Müller (whose favourite pupil he was), study visits in Paris (1909), England and Italy (1913), member of the Reichsverband Bildender Künstler Deutschlands, in the 'Allgemeine Deutsche Kunstgenossenschaft' and in the 'Dresdner Künstlerrat', 1920-25 chairman, later honorary member of the 'Ortsverein Loschwitz', 1941-45 teacher for artistic graphics at the 'Akademie Dresden', active in Dresden and Dresden-Loschwitz, he used the studio K in the 'Künstlerhaus Dresden-Loschwitz' 1941-56, Source: Thieme-Becker, Vollmer, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Dressler, Müller-Singer, "Künstler am Dresdner Elbhang" and internet.
