Sacred Family with John after Andrea del Sarto
Depiction of Mary holding her naked son Jesus in her arms, the infant John the Baptist is depicted at Mary's feet at the bottom left, the motif goes back to the painting "The Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist [eng.: The Virgin and Child with the Infant Baptist]" by the hand of Andrea del Sarto (1486-1530), the motif, reproduced almost in its original format, has been slightly varied; in the original Mary is seated in a light summer landscape in front of a veil, in the background Joseph is kneeling and seems to be communicating with an angel on a cloud, to the left of Mary appear two unidentifiable female figures, in the present baroque copy the scene is arranged as a dusky evening landscape, Joseph and the angel to the right behind Mary are missing and all the figures in the picture have been provided with nimbuses, low-paste religious genre painting, oil on canvas and stretcher, c. 1700, unsigned, old mounted and retouched, triangle tear in the canvas, in need of restoration, unframed, dimensions approx.107,5 x 79 cm.
