Urige, sparsely lit forge with blazing forge fire, various anvils with two workers and an apprentice, atmospheric, minimally impasto painting in muted colours, oil on wood panel, c. 1900, signed and locally inscribed on the lower left "E. Hammer Wm. Hammer Wm.", inscribed and titled on the reverse "E. Hammer Weimar In der Schmiede", retouching, framed, folding dimensions approx. 47 x 56.5 Artist info: German painter. Interior and genre painter (born 1853 in Dresden-Blasewitz or Leipzig), 1876-77 with Austrian state scholarship in Rome, here member of the German Artists' Association, studied 1877-84 at the Grand Ducal Saxon School of Art in Weimar under Woldemar Friedrich, made his debut in 1881 at the exhibition of the Saxon Art Society in Dresden, from 1882 he exhibited at the Dresden Academic Art Exhibition and until 1899 at other exhibitions in Berlin, Dresden and the Glass Palace in Munich, worked in Weimar, in the 1880s he stayed at the painters' colony Kleinsassen in the Röhn , source: Thieme-Becker, Saur "Bio-Bibliographisches Künstlerlexikon", Boetticher, "Dresdner Nachrichten" from 07.11.1881, Bantzer "Hessen in der deutschen Malerei", Wollmann, Schmaling "Künstlerlexikon Hessen-Kassel 1777-2000" and Müller-Singer.
