Head portrait of a younger bearded gentleman in front of a light grey ground, skilfully glazed with a loose, brisk brushstroke, partial low impasto portrait painting in finely graduated, restrained colours, oil on canvas, c. 1890, unsigned, stamp of a Munich painting utensil shop on the reverse of the canvas and stretcher, legible inscription "Slevogt" on the reverse of the canvas, various annotations of different handwriting on the stretcher, some of them indistinctly legible, such as "... Dachauerstr. 45/II.", monogram stamp "AH" and Latin annotation "ex poss. [German possibly by] Ad. Hoelzl", possibly this painting is a youthful portrait of Max Slevogt (1868-1932) by the hand of Adolf Hölzel (1853-1934), both Hölzel and the 15 years younger Slevogt studied at the Munich Academy under Wilhelm von Diez (1839-1907), who introduced his students to the Dachau artists' colony until 1888, Hölzel - at first still attached to the naturalistic-academic style of painting, lived in Dachau 1888-1905 and also Max Slevogt repeatedly stayed in Dachau during his Munich studies (1884-89) and was considered a member of the painters' colony, old retouchings, scratches, somewhat in need of restoration, framed in a later gold stucco frame, folding dimensions approx. 55 x 46.5 cm.
