MONUMENTAL GREEK ICON WITH MAGNIFICENT CARVING SHOWING FEASTS OF THE CHURCH YEAR
probably from the circle of the Wittelsbach King Otto I of Greece (1815-1867), between 1840 and 1860,
104 x 71 cm

Iconographically, the icon is atypical for the Greek region. Icons with feastdays are otherwise known from Russia in a similar composition. But the sequence of the scenes, the representation of the Nativity and Resurrection of Jesus and the representations of St. Apostles Peter and Paul suggest a Roman Catholic client. The icon expert Bernhard Bornheim means: 'The original location of this .... impressive showpiece... can be found....in the immediate vicinity of the king, be it in one of the rooms of his new city palace in Athens, which he moved into in 1842 or in the representative ambience of one of the villas in the capital, inhabited by high-ranking court officials, military, economic experts, architects or scientists who were close to the king and whom he had brought from home..."
