Unbekannter englischer Künstler, Henry Chichele (Chicheley), Erzbischof von Canterbury (1364-1443), Öl/Leinwand, unsigniert, um 1810, rückseitig auf handschriftlichen Etiketten mehrfach bezeichnet und betitelt, lebensgroßes Bildnis des historisch berühmtesten Archbishop of Canterbury, Inquisitors und Gründer des All Souls College an der University of Oxford, Chichele überdauerte in seiner Amtszeit drei Regentschaften von Heinrich IV bis Heinrich VI, herrschte skrupellos an der Spitze der anglikanischen Kirche und propagierte seinen Aufstieg aus der Armut in das höchste kirchliche Amt Britanniens als Lebensmodell für die Gläubigen; Vorlage für dieses Bildnis war ein Stich von E. Brayley (publ. 1806 in London) nach einem Bildnis des Erzbischofs aus dem 15. Jh., welches sich in Lambeth Palace befindet, der Residenz des Erzbischofs für Aufenthalte in London; die dem Stich am oberen und unteren Bildrand beigefügte Bezeichnung in lateinischer Sprache wurde hier handschriftlich auf ein Etikett übertragen und gemeinsam mit einer Übersetzung ins Englische auf der Keilrahmung angebracht; die Schilderung des Erzbischofs weicht in den Farben des Ornats von der Darstellung im Originalgemälde ab, weshalb davon auszugehen ist, dass der Urheber dieser Schilderung nur die Stichvorlage kannte, hier wird Blau als Gewandfarbe eingesetzt, welches die Wappenfarbe der Jurisdiktion des Erzbistums Canterbury ist, die Schmuckelemente wurden leicht verändert und der Bischofsstab nicht ganz korrekt wiedergegeben, insgesamt vermittelt das Portrait ein verehrendes, unkritisches Bild Chicheles in hoher malerischer Qualität, altersgemäß guter Zustand, restauriert, randdoubliert, feines Krakeleenetz, insgesamt qualitätvoll restauriert, handgeschnitzter Holzrahmen, altersgemäß guter Zustand, Rahmenbreite 16 cm, 102 x 83 cm (HxB)

Brayley (publ. 1806 in London) after a portrait of the Archbishop from the 15th century, which is located in Lambeth Palace, the Archbishop's residence for stays in London; the Latin inscription attached to the engraving at the top and bottom of the image was handwritten on a label here and attached to the stretcher together with an English translation; the depiction of the Archbishop differs in the colors of the vestments from the original painting, suggesting that the author of this depiction only knew the engraving, blue is used here as the color of the vestments, which is the heraldic color of the jurisdiction of the Archbishopric of Canterbury, the decorative elements have been slightly altered, and the bishop's staff is not quite accurately rendered, overall, the portrait conveys a reverent, uncritical image of Chichele in high artistic quality, age-appropriate good condition, restored, edge doubled, fine craquelure network, overall, qualitatively restored, hand-carved wooden frame, age-appropriate good condition, frame width 16 cm, 102 x 83 cm (HxW).
