"Crucified Christ" in gilt bronze, possibly France 14th century
It is a Christ still alive, about to expire with his head on one side, with a crown of thorns and his hair hanging in loops on the sloping side. It is nailed to the cross by means of three nails with one leg superimposed on the other and flexed and the foot slightly rotated outwards. The perizonium is knee-length, with naturalistic pleats knotted at the waist.
There are abundant the crucified Christs in metal that would be attached to processional or altar crosses.
This typology of Gothic Christ departs from the more hieratic, inexpressive and frontal Romanesque model, which represents Christ in majesty without any suffering and with four nails. At this time naturalism takes center stage, humanizing the figure of Jesus who suffers and shows the signs of passion. By representing it with three nails, it is given a curvature and movement that affects the folds of the perizonium. At this time religion undergoes a change, starting less in fear to give way to forgiveness and mercy through repentance and follow the straight path. That is reflected in the iconography.
There are some examples with which this piece can be related in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
With contemporary triptych leather case.
Size: 23 x 20 cms.
