Exceptional Enfant Jesus with the Jesuit habit, possibly Novohispanic school of the 17th century
The iconography of the Child with the Thorn, so popular in the New World, is a recurrent and premonitory theme of the future Passion of Christ and the Crowning with Thorns, a theme popularized by Zurbarán on several occasions, we observe that the drop of blood that flows from the finger of the Lord for having pricked himself with a thorn from the crown before which he was meditating, is a testimony of the future Passion and Death of Christ the Savior. In their outfits, we notice the initials of the Society of Jesus, deeply rooted in the lands of New Spain since the beginning of the Conquest. Oil on canvas, canvas measures: 58 x 41 cm
