Pair of children from Extremadura, Eugenio Hermoso (Fregenal de la Sierra, February 26, 1883 – Madrid, February 2, 1963), Spanish school of the 20th century
Oil on canvas, canvas measures: 70 x 43, framed measures: 79 x 62 cm. Spanish painter, academic at the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, of which he became a professor. Very soon, at the same time that he was working in the fields, he began to stand out in painting at the Fregenal school. In January 1898 he traveled to Seville to study at the Santa Isabel de Hungría School of Fine Arts. During his training, he received a scholarship from both the Fregenal City Council and the Badajoz Provincial Council, which allowed him to expand his studies abroad. Both institutions are now part of the board of trustees of the Eugenio Hermoso-Legado Rosario Hermoso Foundation. A student of Gonzalo Bilbao and José Jiménez Aranda in Seville, in 1901 he moved to Madrid. In 1905 he traveled to Paris where he met the avant-garde. In 1905 he led the Exhibition of the Círculo de Bellas Artes: El Colegio e Hijas del Terruño, which is praised by the critic José Francés. In his studio he received and met Juan Gris and Pío Baroja. That same year he traveled to France and Belgium. In 1941, he was elected Academician of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid, occupying the chair of his former teacher in Seville, Gonzalo Bilbao. He and appointed professor by opposition at the Superior School of Fine Arts, of which Eduardo Chicharro was director. He dedicated his admission speech to the Academy to a gloss on Zurbarán's painting.8 His pedagogical facet transmitted his experience of modernity to generations of Spanish artists, but always preserving his deep-rooted classicist sense in his painting and in his teaching work. .
