17th Century Colonial School - Our Lady of Bethlehem
Oil on canvas, relined. Dimensions: 60 x 49 cm. This 17th-century colonial work presents the Virgin of Bethlehem in an intimate portrait, capturing the popular devotion and fervour in the Spanish-American colonies. The Virgin, with her richly decorated blue cloak, holds the Child tenderly, both surrounded by a halo of light that highlights the purity of her gaze. The oil painting reflects the European influences of the Baroque and the local adaptation of Marian iconography, underlining the importance of the Virgin as a symbol of protection and hope for the faithful.
