Castilian School of the 16th century - Plateresque column with Ionic capital
Walnut and gold leaf. 142 × 26 × 26 cm. This imposing column is a magnificent example of the exuberant Plateresque sculpture of the 16th century, masterfully crafted in walnut wood. It has a fluted and gilded shaft, decorated with plant motifs and mythological figures. Its Ionic capital stands out, richly sculpted with volutes and acanthus leaves, which supports an abacus decorated with geometric motifs. The base of the column is adorned with figures of cherubs holding garlands and cornucopias, a symbol of abundance. These decorative elements, together with the original polychromy in gold tones, give the piece a festive and exuberant character. The direct carving technique reveals a high level of detail, while its state of conservation is good, with some small losses of polychromy. This column is a piece of great historical and artistic value, representing the technical quality and rich decoration of 16th century Spanish art, probably originating from an altarpiece or religious building in Castile.
