18th Century Colonial School - Virgin of Sorrows, Polychrome carved wood
Dimensions: 16 × 6 × 4 cm. Carved polychrome wood. The Virgin of Sorrows, standing with her arms crossed over her chest, conveys a deep sense of sorrow and contemplation at the sacrifice of her son. The delicacy with which the tears that run down her face have been sculpted and the subtlety of the chromatic palette of her clothing, typical of the 18th century, enhance the emotionality and pathos of this representation, which follows the Baroque model of capturing human suffering with dramatic intensity.
