Sergei Glagol'. S. T. Konenkov. Russian contemporary art in the biographies and characteristics of artists.
Petersburg, 1920. 54 p. Softcover, 28 x 37 cm. The best specimen seen in the last 25 years . Despite the tearing of the cover.

Contains illustrations. In his book, Sergei Glagol talks about the "sculptor of the people", Sergei Timofeevich Konenkov (1874-1971). The first Chapter is devoted to the history of the family from which the artist came, the story of his ancestors from the serfs, childhood and first steps in art. S. Glagol seeks to reveal the atmosphere in which the future sculptor grew up, then from the everyday environment and family environment that could contribute to the formation of such a bright artistic nature. Konenkov spent his childhood in Patriarchal rural conditions, alone with nature and in the traditions of the village way of life, which had a strong and peculiar impact on the work of the sculptor. The author of the biographical essay traces the origins of the sculptor's artistic worldview, characterizes a particular period of Konenkov's work by analyzing the most striking of his works - the famous "Kamneboyts", "Samson", etc., which equally violated the canons that existed at that time and initially caused acute rejection by critics. The book was actually a summary of the entire period of Konenkov's life and work before emigration. According To S. Glagol, the significance of the sculptor's work was that the master revived attention to sculpture, used an unusual material, wood in a new way. Konenkov can be called a truly Russian, national artist-both on the basis of the range of topics he touched upon, and on the basis of his own words that his native land, like nothing else, fed him the power to create. At the end of the publication is a complete list of works by S. T. Konenkov, created from 1898 to 1919.
