Johannes Götz, (1865 - 1934), "The Water Bearer", 1892
Bronze nude girl, patinated. Depiction of a naked young girl with braided hair, filling her water bucket. She stands on a pedestal in the shape of a rock and carries two buckets on a pole over her right shoulder as she bends down to fill them. Inscribed and dated on the plinth: J. Götz, Roma 92, foundry mark on the reverse of the base: Guss Martin & Piltzing in Berlin. Inside the base a label with information on the work and artist. Dimensions approx. 71 x 40 x 23 cm, weight 15.7 kg. Good condition with signs of age and use, one bucket with broken handle, rod also with repair. Johannes Götz (1865 Fürth - 1934 Potsdam), attended the Nuremberg School of Arts and Crafts and was a student of Reinhold Begas in Berlin from 1884. He won the Rome Prize with his figure of a water scoop and thus spent around two years studying in Rome from 1892. He won a small gold medal at the major Berlin art exhibition in 1893. Kaiser Wilhelm II held the artist in high esteem. One of his main works was his Fighting Achilles from 1909 for the Achilleion, which formed the counterpart to the Dying Achilles by Ernst Herters, a commission from Elisabeth of Austria-Hungary.
