Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (1726-1801), Two copper engravings, 18th century.
Two copper engravings framed with passepartout in wooden frames painted in gold. One a small portrait in profile of "Sophie Becker" (probably 1791) in a circle decorated with a skull with wings at the bottom and the other "Tusnelde in captivity". The scene shows Thusnelda, the daughter of the Cheruscan prince Segestes and wife of the Cheruscan prince Arminius, being led as a prisoner. The parties are standing opposite each other on a drawbridge. Below the text: "Tusnelde in captivity shows more greatness than the victor". Both signed lower right. Dimensions: The former: frame dimensions approx. 28.5 x 38 cm, image dimensions approx. 8x9 cm, the latter: Frame size approx. 32 x 44.5 cm, image size approx. 15.5 x 22 cm. Both in good condition with staining. Daniel Nikolaus Chodowiecki (born 1726 in Danzig; died 1801 in Berlin) was a German engraver, graphic artist and illustrator. He was taught by Johann Jakob Haid from Augsburg, the Berlin history painter Bernhard Rode and Johann Heinrich Meil, among others.
