TIEDEMANN'S TOBAK
Porcelain sign / enamel sign, stenciled and lithographed, beaded edge, NOR 20s, 50 x 100 cm, a variant not often seen - the sailor seems much more daring than the "landlubbers" of the other signs, the pack at the bottom left shows his likeness. For those who don't know, Johann Ludwig Tiedemann, who gave his name to what is sometimes Scandinavia's largest tobacco factory, was a German emigrant who had previously fought as a lieutenant in the Napoleonic Wars. He took over the "Jacobsen Tobak Compagnie" in 1822 and quickly established himself in a flourishing market.
