A VERY FINE AND LARGE ICON SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD ‘THE UNBURNT THORNBUSH’ WITH A SILVER OKLAD Russian, 19th century (icon), Russian, St. Petersburg, Nikolay Nikitin, 1869 (oklad) Egg tempera on wood panel with velvet backing and with kovcheg. Finely executed on a gold ground. In the centre of the composition the Mother of God of the Burning Bush in a double, circular and rayed aureole, against two diamond-shaped glories, the green one painted with angels in grisaille, the red one representing the Apocalyptic personifications of the Evangelists. Further behind, swirling clouds of different colours containing angels, each holding attributes of varying symbolisms. The corners illustrating four prophets including David and Salomon. The spandrels depicting Old Testament typological apparitions related to the Mother of God. The lower border portraying the Fiery Furnace in the Book of Daniel. Twelve Old Testament prophets bearing open scrolls appearing on the borders. The imagery rendered delicately largely with bright colours in reds and greens. Overlaid with a richly chased and embossed silver-gilt oklad. Marked with city hallmark, assayer’s mark, 84 standard and master’s mark ‘NN’. The lower right corner minimally restored. 44 x 35.5 cm.
