Stone arch bridge leading over a leisurely flowing river with an elderly hiker gazing with interest at the viewer, mountainous landscape in the background, watercolour, c. 1830-40, signed lower right "J. Zelger p.", on the reverse of the frame photograph of the artist, numerous newspaper articles from his lifetime and extensively inscribed in Sütterlin, somewhat wavy, under mount (dirty marks) and behind glass in a gilded frame, mount cut-out approx. 22.5 x 29 cm. Artist info: also Joseph, Swiss landscape painter (1812 Stans to 1885 Lucerne), pupil of Johann Baptist Marzohl, went to Geneva in 1830 and worked here in the studio of François Diday, after ca. In 1851 he settled in Lucerne, in 1857 he travelled to Constant Troyon and studied the works of the Barbizon painters, in 1868 Queen Victoria of England acquired eight of the artist's works during her visit to Switzerland, in 1874 he was prevented from further artistic activity by paralysis of the right arm, friendship with Richard Wagner, Source: sikart und Historisches Lexikon der Schweiz.
