Rushing mountain stream against a dark forest backdrop, with a small homestead on the bank, in the background mountains immersed in mist and a bird circling above the water, extremely atmospheric, in parts somewhat impasto landscape painting with fine, detailed brushwork, oil on canvas, 1860s, signed lower left, locally inscribed and partly illegibly dated "T. Schiess M[ünchen] 186...", partly illegible label on the reverse of the stretcher "T. Schie.... ...unchen", painting surface minimally rubbed in places, minor craquelure in places, minimally in need of cleaning, framed in a damaged gold stucco frame, folding dimensions approx. 40 x 57.5 cm. Artist info: Swiss landscape and animal painter (1834 St. Gallen to 1869 Munich), apprenticeship in lithographic drawing in St. Gallen, 1851 to 1854 lessons with Friedrich Horner in Basel, from 1854 living in Munich, lessons with Friedrich Voltz and Johann Gottfried Steffan, one of the most important Swiss landscape painters of the 19th century, whose daughter Emilie Steffan Schiess married in 1862, summer stays in Switzerland, study visits with Rudolf Koller in Zurich, encounter with Arnold Böcklin in Munich, Source: Thieme-Becker, Wikipedia.
